King
Arthur’s
Marriage

Hengist & Horsa
There are no contemporary accounts of either
of these figures.
Hengist (? – 488?) He is recorded as a
warrior and Saxon King of Kent and lived long enough to have been active during
the King Arthur period.
Horsa (? – 455?) Hengist’s brother. Death in
455 would put him well before the start of King Arthur’s reign.
Hengist was the leader with his brother
Horsa of the first Saxon invasions of Britain. He himself may have been a Jute.
According to Bede (673? – 735) Hengist brought a military force to Britain at
the invitation of the British King Vortigern in 449 to assist on a mercenary
basis in war with Picts.
After a rift with Vortigern the Saxons seized
Kent, a situation which Vortigern agreed to accept. Hengist is then said to
have created a Kingdom in Kent and used it as a base for further Saxon
expansion and this encouraged more immigrants to come to Britain.
The later kings of Kent claimed descent from
Hengist’s son Aesc or Oisc and it is possible that Aesc actually establiseh the
kingdom.
The names Hengist and Horsa mean Gelding and
Horse and it may be that these were titles derived from a cult of horsemanship.
Horsa was killed at the battle of
Aegelsthrep in Kent (possibly Aylesford)
